The Northmarches is a generic term employed by the people of the civilized south to refer to the large area in the North that remains unexplored and certainly unknown by most people. It is the only part of the continent that is not part community of nations, the world that was spawned by the Eastern invasions and the displacement of the Hvarlheimdal.
It is inhabited by tribes that refer to themselves as the “Free Folk”, who coexist with wild creatures, giants, snow trolls, Sabrecats and all manners of old gods and eldritch snow creatures. The people who live in the north are free, are anything but unified, and consist of numerous and diverse groups. Many are semi-nomadic hunters, due to the supposed impracticality of agriculture in the far north. Some Free Men are little more than savage and primitive raiders, but other groups live in small settled communities and villages.
The lands are mostly uncharted. The region includes the Kjørehanskefrost Forest, a vast taiga-forest which covers most of the area, extending all the way to the furthest uncharted north.
The forest extends from the eastern coast to a large mountain chain in the west known as the Hvarnlosts. The Hvarnlost Mountains extend an unknown distance to the north and are quite inhospitable. However, there are rumors that even the northern Hvarnlosts contain hidden valleys, heated by volcanic activity, which are actually the most hospitable regions in the north, where even agriculture is probable, they may be heavily settled.
Southwest of the Hvarnlosts there is a narrow strip of land between the mountains and the sea known as Birgenheim, a harsh area inhabited by fierce and primitive warriors who frequently cross the bay to raid the lands in to the south. This small area is totally enclosed by the Hvarnlosts, which run southeast to northwest, and the ocean.
Beyond all of these areas, in the furthest north, the forest ends and gives way to these truly polar regions, which are unexplored.
